NICHICON Launches the UXY Series of Vibration-Resistant,Lead-Type Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
2018-01-18 | ReturnThis product was displayed 9th EV & HEV Drive System Technology Expo, held at Tokyo Big Sight on Wednesday, January 17, to Friday, January 19, 2018. It will also be on display at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC 2018) being held in San Antonio, TX from March 5 to March 7, 2018
Overview/Development Background
In recent years, the placement of the engine control power train ECU as well as other control units have been moved from the cabin to the engine compartment as a result of their placement directly on the engine and transmissions the demands for high vibration resistance has increased. The UXY series was developed to meet these market demands.
In conventional products, there is a gap between the element and case which allows the element to shake, and increases the risk of disconnection of the lead terminals in high vibration environment. This series of products addresses the issue by using slits at the side of the capacitor case. These slits reduces stress on the lead terminal and therefore increases vibration resistance. When developing this case, we used simulation technology to compare the amount of stress placed on the lead terminals as the number of slits varied. Figure 1, shows the simulation results for the different number of slits. This simulation indicates that that stress on the lead terminals tends to decrease as the number of slits increases, with the stress reduction tending to taper off after six or more slits. Taking into consideration the tradeoff between the safety of case processing and increasing the number of slits, we therefore decided to use six slits. We launched the UXY series after confirming vibration resistance through actual testing of the cases with slits.
Features
As in-vehicle applications require high capacity, product sizes increase. However, as product size becomes larger, the vibration resistance tends to decrease because of an increasing amount of stress placed on the lead terminal bases. To solve this problem, we employed a new, proprietary structure to realize a larger-size product (φ18 x 31.5L, φ18 x 40L) able to handle up to 40G of vibration acceleration and high temperatures of 125°C and 135°C.
With this series lineup, NICHICON believes it can meet demands for high vibration resistance in various in-vehicle control units. By using a case with slits, we have realized a capacitor whose vibration resistance does not change over time.
