The first devices of the new VE-Trac ™ family of platforms provide market-leading electrical and thermal performance, with market-capable capacity and an extended supply chain, to be exhibited at the US International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020

US International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – The Venetian 3302 – Las Vegas, Nevada-December 17, 2019 — ON Semiconductor driving energy-efficient innovation , Launched the first two devices of the new VE-Trac ™ series power modules for high-voltage automotive traction inverters. These two power integration modules (PIM) provide best-in-class electrical and thermal performance while providing scalability and automotive reliability for the rapidly growing traction inverter market. In the future, the VE-Trac series will include discrete power devices, isolated gate drivers and extended module solutions, as well as wide band gap (WBG) devices, which will provide automotive system designers with more product lineups to help them improve performance.

The first two devices to be released are ideally suited for the main traction inverters of all types of electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), and full hybrid vehicles (HEV). The introduction of these two devices enables ON Semiconductor to provide two traction inverter design platforms: VE-Trac Dual and VE-Trac Direct.

VE-Trac Dual will incorporate a series of double-sided cooling (DSC) half-bridge modules that can be stacked and expanded in a compact footprint for traction applications. V-Trac Dual is another platform solution for traction inverter applications from 80 kW to 300 kW, minimizing mechanical redesign. The first VE-Trac Dual device released was the NVG800A75L4DSC, which has a rated voltage of 750 V and a rated current of 800 A, which is twice the capacity of existing competing devices. Its market-leading thermal performance is achieved using efficient double-sided cooling.

The NVG800A75L4DSC is an AQG-324-certified module with embedded intelligent IGBTs, providing faster response time for integrated overcurrent and overheat protection functions, and providing a more robust overall solution. There are no bonding wires in the module, doubling its rated life. ON Semiconductor will launch additional devices with higher voltage and various current level options in the VE-Trac Dual platform in the coming months to address a variety of emerging applications.

At the same time, the VE-Trac Direct platform offers best-in-class performance and benefits, including direct cooling for outstanding thermal performance. The first device on this platform was the AQG-324 certified NVH820S75L4SPB. The device is packaged in a six-pack architecture and has been widely recognized and adopted by automotive OEMs and system suppliers. This will support multi-source provisioning and minimize layout changes. With multiple power levels available, the VE-Trac Direct platform will provide simple and fast power adjustments for different automotive platforms and applications.

Both the VE-Trac Direct and VE-Trac Dual platforms are capable of continuous operation at a junction temperature of up to 175ºC, providing higher power in a compact package with a modular solution.

ON Semiconductor recognizes the rapid popularity and growth of various forms of electric vehicles and has invested heavily in manufacturing capabilities and integrated supply chains. This means that the VE-Trac series will be able to meet the potentially high demand for wide voltage range devices required by automotive traction inverters.

"If these highly integrated new devices and The entire VE-Trac series fully reflects ON Semiconductor's commitment to providing energy-efficient innovations in the automotive field to meet current challenges and promote the rapid development and adoption of electric powertrains. As we adopt more technologies and formats The devices and modules are on the market and will continue to meet all types of traction inverter and motor applications. Future new products will include devices with higher and lower voltage capabilities than these two first-generation devices. "

CES 2020
ON Semiconductor's new NVG800A75L4DSC-EVK and NVH820S75L4SPB-EVKVE-Trac evaluation kits will be on display at Murano 3302 at the Venetian / Sands Convention Center during CES. Demonstrations in other areas of automotive electronics will include stand-alone 48 V load protection and management systems for mild hybrid electric vehicles, and 48 V starter / generator power stage designs, showing ON Semiconductor ’s power generation for belt drive High-efficiency, high-power-density solutions for generator (BSG) / integrated starter generator (ISG) applications.
