With help from Qualcomm Technologies, the iRobot Roomba i7+ Robot Vacuum delivers more intelligent, effective cleaning

We all lead busy lives. At times, it can be a challenge to manage all we need to get done in a given day. iRobot, the leader in consumer vacuum robots, has been lending a hand since 2002, helping people keep their homes clean with its Roomba robot vacuums. Recently, the company introduced the Roomba i7+, their first vacuum cleaner to include a Qualcomm Technologies processor.

The Qualcomm APQ8009 processor helps provide the Roomba i7+ with a significant boost in computing power for a smarter, more efficient robot. And thanks to the processor’s integrated AI technology, along with software and technologies developed by iRobot, the vacuum can remember a home's floor plan, clean specific rooms by name, and automatically empty its dust bin. The Roomba i7+ is a great example of how Qualcomm Technologies’ inventions help enable our customers to bring innovative, new IoT products to market — products that enrich lives.

Getting to know you and your home
Using AI that’s built into the Qualcomm APQ8009 and technologies including iRobot’s Imprint Smart Mapping software, the Roomba i7+ is designed to get to know where the rooms in your house are located. It can also learn and adapt to changing home environments over time. It can remember up to 10 different floor plans, so you can even carry it from house to house; the Roomba i7+ is designed to automatically recognize where it is and cleans accordingly.

Camera support is optimized for vSLAM (visual simultaneous localization and mapping) technology, which can allow the robot to efficiently navigate a home by keeping track of where it's been and where it has yet to clean.

The Roomba i7+’s sensors detect particularly dirty spots, so it can focus its cleaning on areas that need it most. Once it’s done, the robot heads to the first-of-its-kind Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal, which doubles as its charging station. It then automatically empties its bin into the Clean Base. Debris is stored in an enclosed bag, preventing dirt and dust to escape. When the bag is full (each holds 30 full bins), you’re notified via the iRobot HOME app.

Establishing a connection
You can control the Wi-Fi connected Roomba i7+ from your smartphone; the HOME app (available for Android and iOS) lets you decide how, when, and where the robot vacuums. Cleanings can be started, paused, scheduled via the app, and preferences can be set (how many passes it does, for example).

A true IoT device, the Roomba i7+ works with popular digital assistants like Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant. Simply say “Alexa, ask Roomba to clean my kitchen” and it can know which room to go to and how to clean it most effectively.

The Qualcomm APQ8009’s Boot A/B support is designed to ensure a workable booting system on the disk during over-the-air updates. This allows the robot to increase its capabilities and take on new features over time.

The new Roomba i7+ provides a virtually unmatched combination of computing, connectivity integration, and advanced capabilities. Products like this showcase our commitment to bringing comprehensive IoT solutions to our customers, so they can transform the way you live.
