Marine and mobile communication system
Specified low power radio and telemeter transmitter

【Developmental Background】
Recently, commercial and public safety radios are becoming multifunctional due to shifting from analog radio to digital radio. In order to integrate a wide range of sensors into a digital radio, the need for minimizing PCB size is getting stronger. On the other hand, commercial and public safety radios requiring high selectivity, high linearity and high resistance to spurious still consist of various discrete parts. Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) has been providing distinctive products such as variable bandwidth IF filter the AK2365A which eliminates the need for an external ceramic filter, and fractional-N synthesizer the AK1590 that has industry’s lowest class power consumption. In order to meet the market demand, variable bandwidth IF filter, fractional-N synthesizer, 12bits 1Msps ADC, FM demodulating circuit and necessary functions for two-way radios are integrated into a 8mm×8mm package, using the experience with developing existing products. A deep consideration is given to the circuit layout, so that this integration does not degrade its performance and even simplifies the design of two-way radio systems that are getting more complex.

1. Variable Bandwidth IF Filter - eliminating the need for an external ceramic filter
Integrated IF filter with narrow band and high selectivity enables users to minimize PCB size by eliminating an external ceramic filter used as IF filter, and it improves the resistance of impack by dropping a two-way radio. Frequency response of the IF filter has very small temperature drift and a device variation.

2. Fractional-N synthesizer – the industry’s lowest class power consumption of 2.6mA
The fractional-N synthesizer achieves higher frequency resolution than PFD frequency which is obtained by dividing TCXO frequency. The AK2400 has 18bit ΔΣ circuit which achieves frequency resolution of tens of Hz and is suitable for digital radios which are becoming more narrow band. The fractional-N synthesizer shows power consumption of 2.6mA and is ideal for radios run by batteries.
