RX111 Wi-Fi Cloud Connectivity Kit Features Renesas’ RX111 Group of MCUs, Micrium Spectrum Embedded Software and µC/Probe Tool, Medium One Cloud Services and Leverages Qualcomm Wi-Fi Module to Provide Robust Connected Evaluation Solution

SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 30, 2015 — Renesas Electronics America Inc., a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, Micrium, the premier real time operating systems (RTOS) provider for embedded systems and Medium One, a leading Internet of Things (IoT) Data Intelligence company, today announced their collaboration on the RX111 Wi-Fi Cloud Connectivity Kit. The low-cost, low-power, and easy-to-use solution kit is designed to simplify and dramatically accelerate embedded solution development for applications requiring Wi-Fi® cloud connectivity.

Based on the Renesas popular RX111 Group of 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), the new evaluation kit incorporates the Micrium Spectrum embedded software, µC/Probe visualization tool and Medium One Cloud services with IoT workflows and leverages Wi-Fi capabilities from Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, enabling developers to quickly and easily evaluate the IoT capabilities of the RX111 Group and its on-chip peripherals with an out-of-the-box platform for smart homes, industrial automation, and consumer applications. The combination of the RX111 Group, end-to-end IoT embedded software components from Micrium, Medium One Cloud-based IoT workflows and Qualcomm Atheros’ QCA4002 low-power Wi-Fi System on Chip (SoC) provide a cost-effective, low-power embedded solution ideally suited for IoT applications.

“The IoT ecosystem is still evolving, creating opportunities in multiple market segments as well as creating a very competitive environment where time to market is a critical element for success,” said Vin D’Agostino Vice President of the General Purpose Products Business Unit, Renesas Electronics America. “Building on our embedded design expertise, Micrium’s embedded software, Medium One’s Cloud capabilities, and Qualcomm Atheros’ Wi-Fi technology, the RX111 Wi-Fi Cloud Connectivity Kit helps improve time to market significantly, and offers customers an easy-to-use, proven pre-integrated hardware and software partnered solution that addresses many IoT development challenges from the device to the cloud.”

“The IoT is bringing together embedded and cloud services designers, who have historically operated in different spaces and often using different platforms,” said Jean Labrosse, President and CEO, Micrium. “Working together with Renesas, Medium One, and Qualcomm Atheros offers a bridge designed to facilitate IoT designs and simplify the design process. Now, using the new RX111 kit, designers can rapidly solve their design and connectivity challenges and quickly get their devices into the cloud.”

“The cloud-based capabilities of Medium One’s Workflow platform enable developers to build their IOT solutions and extract data intelligence faster than current methods. By working with industry leaders Renesas, Micrium, and Qualcomm Atheros, we are making it easy for embedded developers to access our integrated Real-Time Stream Processing and Big Data Analytics in a low-cost, easy to configure evaluation kit,” added David Thai, President and CEO of Medium One.

The RX111 Wi-Fi Cloud Connectivity Kit comes pre-programmed with Micrium’s Smart Garage Door Demo, an end-to-end IoT demo that connects data from the RX111 Group to Medium One Cloud services. This demo shows how a cost-effective group of MCUs like the RX111 Group takes advantage of the QCA4002 Wi-Fi capabilities and MQTT, making it ideal for sensor- or node- based IoT applications.

About the RX111 Wi-Fi Cloud Connectivity Kit

Renesas’ RX111 Group contains up to 512KB flash memory and 64KB SRAM, and provides the backbone of the new RX111 Wi-Fi Cloud Connectivity Kit. The RX111 Group features advanced hardware DSP and vast serial communications capabilities for UART, SPI, I2C, and USB all in a True-Low Power™ 32-bit Group of MCUs. Micrium Spectrum with µC/Probe® is a pre-integrated portfolio of embedded software and protocol stacks designed to facilitate development of IoT applications from device to the cloud. The solutions kit is comprised of the uC/OS-III® RTOS kernel, uC/USB and the MQTT protocol, and can be used with uC/Probe as a method of interfacing to the RX111 Group embedded target. It also includes the driver to connect with the QCA4002 Wi-Fi module.

These capabilities enable Micrium to support Medium One’s cloud-based computing and data intelligence platform. Medium One is an IoT cloud provider that provides integrated real-time stream processing, big data analytics, machine learning, and much more. The Medium One platform allows developers to build application logic using event-driven workflows, custom python and IoT-centric libraries. The kit also contains four PMOD connectors that enable the user to easily add and test other commercially available PMOD modules. The combination of Renesas’ powerful RX111 MCU, Micrium embedded software, Medium One’s Cloud and Data Intelligence, and Qualcomm Atheros’ QCA4002 low-energy Wi-Fi solution deliver a pre-configured platform that is easy to use and dramatically accelerates IoT development cycles.
