AKM releases a sample of its Bluetooth® transmission module with direction finding function for the use of indoor positioning

Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) has developed the AK1595A Bluetooth® Low Energy transmission IC that supports the direction finding function, which is expected to be used for indoor positioning applications.
As it does not have a receiving function, it is suitable for applications requiring transmission only.
Contributes to lower the cost for applications that require a large number of beacon tags such as real-time location systems.
It has already acquired Bluetooth® 5.3 qualification and is the industry's first (*1) transmission-only IC, which acquired the qualification that includes a direction finding function option.
The AK1595A is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2023.
Samples of the transmission module, which can be combined with u-blox's receiver module (*2) to realize indoor positioning demonstrations, became available from September 2022.

Product Features
Bluetooth® Low Energy Transmission-only IC
With the built-in protocol stack required for Bluetooth® advertising transmission, Bluetooth® beacons can be easily realized without complicated programming by simply setting the IC and transmission data to registers using UART or I2C.
Direction finding function
A CTE (Constant Tone Extension) can be added to the end of an advertising packet and be sent as an inexpensive tag for AoA (Angle of Arrival), a type of a direction finding function.
Low power consumption timer
Equipped with a timer of 0.5uA typ. including interrupt signal output function to an external microcontroller.
The sleep current of the external MCU can be minimized during intermittent transmission, making it easy to design a low-power system.

● It is also suitable for adding a Bluetooth® function to existing microcontroller devices such as blood pressure monitors.
