NSOFT’s LoRa-based smart metering platform improves grid efficiency up to 25 percent and provide utility customers a quick return on investment (ROI)

CAMARILLO, Calif., November 6, 2019 – Semtech Corporation, a leading supplier of high performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms, announced that NSOFT, a leading Indian provider of automation and metering solutions for distribution utilities, has developed a new smart metering platform based on Semtech’s LoRa® devices and the LoRaWAN® protocol. The meters leverage LoRa devices’ capabilities for long range, reliable data transfer and low power operation to provide utility networks with accurate real-time consumption data. In addition, NSOFT’s “Smart Read” family of modules use LoRa devices to seamlessly convert older solutions to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). This brings additional benefits to the customer, including reduced waste and cost, and increased efficiency for the grid.

“Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol are truly a trailblazing platform for long range communication and the transfer of data in the M2M and Internet of Things (IoT) context,” said Dr. Naagaraj Subramanya, Managing Director at NSOFT. “Our LoRa-based metering applications help build utility networks cost effectively and securely, while using low power to create solutions that operate reliably in challenging environments. We expect LoRa-based solutions to continue to play a large role in the Indian smart metering marketplace as these solutions help provide a quicker return on investment (ROI). With our leading applications, NSOFT customers typically improve their grid efficiency up to 25 percent.”

NSOFT’s LoRa-based solutions include metering applications for electricity, water and gas utilities. As the utility market continues to grow and advance, utility providers require increasingly flexible solutions to record and transmit accurate usage data. AMI, or smart meters, are one critical application for a creating a more efficient grid. LoRa-based AMI meters enable the long range, bi-directional transfer of data, creating an efficient method of meter reading and eliminating costly manual processes. Utility providers leverage third-party applications to track trends and prevent leaks in the utility grid, increasing efficiency, cost savings and sustainability.

“NSOFT’s smart meters use LoRa devices’ proven feature set for the utilities vertical market to present utility providers and customers with accurate and reliable usage data for improved efficiency,” said Rémi Demerlé, Director of Vertical Marketing for Utilities in Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol are the de facto choice for LPWAN-based IoT applications. Experts predict a significant portion of smart meters deployed by utilities will utilize LPWAN connectivity by 2026, and LoRaWAN is well positioned to lead in this space.”
