Toshiba Testing Laboratory Meets Global Standard, Receive ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation
2018-11-19 | ReturnTOKYO--Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) today announced that its EMC Test Laboratory has been accredited as meeting the ISO/IEC 17025 quality management standard by the Japan Accreditation Board for Conformity (“JAB”), an independent third-party accreditation authority. The award of the accreditation confirms that the center meets the stringent international standard for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing.
EMC tests evaluate products for “emissions” and “immunity”. The former is the ability to suppress unwanted generation of electromagnetic energy, the latter the ability to function properly when exposed to radio frequency interference from other products. Electromagnetic noise can cause malfunctions in electrical equipment and telecommunication failures, and even impact on human health. EMC evaluation starts at the semiconductor level, and is especially important for automotive semiconductors, as the ECE R10, the globally accepted international regulation on EMC of vehicles and automotive devices is influential.
ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the accreditation of testing and calibration laboratories. Its scope includes quality management system requirements and technical requirements that ensure accredited laboratories are equipped to perform a range of specific tests and calibration activities.
Toshiba enhanced its EMC testing function by establishing the Test Laboratory in May 2016, as part of a strategy to boost the automotive semiconductors business, a priority area. The laboratory’s quality management skills and evaluation techniques earned high evaluations from JAB in the accreditation process.
Previously, Toshiba had to outsource testing when required to submit product test results with ISO/IEC 17025 certification. Acquisition of ISO/IEC 17025 and in-house testing contributes to smoother development and shorter development times, as the company can now deliver reliable measurement data to customers when they need them.
Toshiba will continue to apply world-class quality management skills throughout its operations, including testing, and to develop and deliver automotive semiconductors offering high levels of performance and reliability.
