Description

Recently, the increasing popularity of robotic applications has driven demand to minimize PCB size, and thus shrink motor size.

Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation, (AKM), has now released the AK9242NK, a high-resolution analog front end, (AFE), with A/D converter. It includes various calculation functions and circuits such as the added PGA. The AK9242NK also has an instrumentation amplifier and TIA, enabling the selection of magnetic or optical encoder inputs. Input range can be changed according to the system with the integrated PGAs. The AK9242NK is housed in a small 4mm x 4mm QFN package. The AK9242NK is suitable for a compact, high accuracy, and versatile systems. In addition, AKM has made available the AK9240NK, a 12-bit version of the AK9242NK. The AK9240NK is packaged in an ultra-small 3mm x 3mm QFN package. A 14-bit version, the AK9243NK, is under development.

Features

● TIA / Instrumentation Amplifier

The AK9242NK, AK9243NK, AK9240NK integrates an instrumentation amplifier, enabling to connect a voltage output sensor directly. A current output sensor can also be connected directly since the AK9242NK, AK9243NK, AK9240NK has trans impedance amplifiers (TIA). This reduces analog circuit design time.

● Integrated PGA

The AK9242NK, AK9243NK, AK9240NK has PGAs and the input range can be changed according to the systems. The specified characteristics in the datasheet are with a high gain setting, so the noise characteristics of the system can be easily improved.

● Small Package

The AK9242NK, AK9243NK adopts a 24-pin 4mm x 4mm small QFN package.

● Offset / Gain / Phase Adjustment Function

Offset, gain, and phase adjustments for the converted signal are available for each channel independently with the AK9242NK, AK9243NK minimizing the need for external processing.

● Polar Coordinate Output Function

The AK9242NK, AK9243NK is capable of a polar coordinate output, (angle, "θ", moving radius, "r"), when cosine and sine waves are input to CH0 and CH1, respectively. This results in simultaneous conversion of the input signals of CH0 and CH1. At minimum, it takes 3μsec to output the data after sampling, which includes angle calculation.
