Fujitsu Adds to Smart CPRI Transport Family for Evolving C-RAN Architecture

Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. today announced the availability of the HSN8110A/D Pole-Mount Transport Multiplexer as the newest addition to its family of Smart CPRI Transport solutions. The HSN8110A/D, optimized for outdoor small cell sites, provides CPRI fronthaul transport between remote radio heads (RRHs) and a centralized baseband unit (BBU) in Centralized Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architectures or serves as an Ethernet backhaul interface for distributed RAN architectures.

Announced in March 2016, Fujitsu’s Smart CPRI Transport solution creates an intelligent means by which mobile network operators can implement C-RAN architectures. Specifically designed to support advanced C-RAN fronthaul deployments, the solution contains a smart WDM system with integrated diagnostics, remote visibility, self-healing functionality, and ultralow latency. The result is fast installation, high service availability, and a dense scalable architecture that easily adapts to growing demand.

The new HSN8110A/D is used to transport CPRI and GbE services from a small cell site as a remote terminal for the other platforms in the Smart CPRI Transport family – HSN8500, HSN8300 and HSN8100. The HSN8110A/D has its own outdoor enclosure for wall or pole mount, including an integrated four-port transponder for CPRI or GbE service delivery via CWDM or DWDM over dark fiber. The multi-protocol system has capacity up to four CPRI channels, each up to 10Gbps, or three CPRI plus one GbE channel.

In June 2017, the entire Smart CPRI Transport family will interoperate with Virtuora®, Fujitsu’s SDN control platform and supporting application to provide traffic provisioning, integrated test measurement and overall system monitoring.

The Smart CPRI Transport family not only integrates with existing wireless transport assets, but it prepares operators for future migration. In addition to its current support for 2G, 3G and 4G LTE/LTE-A, future standards-based enhancements to the portfolio will allow coexistence of 5G services on the solution without a network overlay, leveraging the initial Fujitsu investment.

“Wireless service providers and wireline operators need an infrastructure that will utilize the latest transport technologies and quickly support new revenue-generating services,” said Christine Podraza, head of the optical business unit, Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. “The HSN8110A/D is a valuable part of such a network. It has the same functional capability as the existing chassis-based platforms in the Smart CPRI Transport family, but its self-contained, temperature-hardened enclosure and optimization for small cell performance bring a unique solution to the market.”

Fujitsu’s Smart CPRI Transport solution was recently honored with a 2017 Lightwave Innovation Reviews Award as one of the Elite products and solutions available within the optical networking industry. Like the rest of the Smart CPRI Transport family, the HSN8110A/D is manufactured and supported at Fujitsu’s manufacturing plant in Richardson, TX.
